Feeling the Burn? Understanding and Managing EMF Exposure from Everyday Devices

Many of us spend hours on computers daily. Last week, after many days of intense pain, I found out first hand just how dangerous that can be!

Introduction
Many of us spend hours on computers daily. But for some, especially those sensitive to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), prolonged exposure can lead to sensations of heat, tingling, or even discomfort. EMF exposure has become a growing concern, as these invisible energy fields are emitted by many common devices, including computers, phones, and Wi-Fi routers.

I recently experienced this first-hand, (massive pain in head, hands, knees, chest and teeth!) which led me to a deep dive into EMF risks and solutions—here’s what I found…

What Are EMFs and How Do They Impact Us?
EMFs are waves of electric and magnetic energy generated by electrical devices. They come in two main types:

  • Low-frequency EMFs: Emitted by computers, TVs, and household appliances.

  • High-frequency EMFs: Produced by devices like microwaves, cell towers, and Wi-Fi, with shorter, more intense waves.

Research is still exploring EMF effects, but some people report symptoms like headaches, tingling, and skin irritation. Studies have raised concerns about long-term exposure, potentially linking EMFs with more serious health issues.

Detecting and Assessing EMF Exposure
To monitor your exposure levels, you can invest in a personal EMF meter. EMF meters are handheld devices that help you measure the intensity of electromagnetic radiation around your workspace and home. Look for areas with high readings, like close to your computer and other devices.

This one came highly recommended, so I ordered it from Amazon. I will let you know what I discover after I read the fields in the house! But feel free to check it out here.

Steps to Protect Yourself from EMFs
Here are some practical steps to reduce EMF exposure and create a safer environment:

1. Upgrade Your Equipment: As I found out, an older computer can generate higher EMF emissions than newer models, especially if it's overheating. I bit the bullet and bought a new computer. My new device has been much better, reducing the sensation of heat and discomfort.

2. Create Distance: Keep a bit of distance from your devices. An arm's length away from your computer screen and peripherals can help reduce your exposure, and whenever possible, avoid resting your laptop on your lap for long periods. I was doing that in the days before I replaced the computer and found that while sitting further away, (at a separate desk…I bought a wired mouse and keyboard and was a good 3 feet from my laptop…) not only was it more comfortable, I didn’t have to use my glasses to see the screen!

3. Use EMF-Blocking Products: There are several products designed to shield against EMFs, like laptop pads, protective cases, and even EMF-resistant clothing. I found some clothing options online, which can be worn to protect more sensitive areas, especially when working on a computer for extended periods. See article on clothing here.

4. Limit Wi-Fi and Cell Phone Usage: Since Wi-Fi and phones emit higher-frequency EMFs, turn off Wi-Fi routers when not in use and use speakerphone or wired earbuds to avoid holding your phone directly to your head.

I almost NEVER talk with my cellphone to my ear, I’m either texting or on speakerphone.  And, I’ve started turning off my wifi at night. What do you do?

5. Consider Grounding Techniques: Grounding, or earthing, involves connecting directly with the Earth to balance your body’s electrical charge. Some find it helpful to spend time barefoot on grass or use grounding mats.

(True story…sometimes if I can’t sleep at night I get up and run on the grass barefoot…it really helps!)

Final Thoughts
While research is ongoing, reducing EMF exposure wherever possible may bring a sense of security, especially for those who are sensitive to these fields. My experience with switching computers showed that even small changes could make a difference. Whether by upgrading devices, using EMF shields, or adjusting how we work, there are ways to create a healthier, more comfortable environment.

Its pretty obvious that computers are here to stay, so looking into it sooner, rather than later is a great idea!
