Home Remedies

One of the most enduring, widely used, and effective home remedies is made with elderberries. Sure, you can go to the health food store and buy some (it’s great for your immune system and helps fight colds and flu) but why not grow it yourself?

I planted a twig of elderberry about 3 years ago and now they are at least 12 feet high (not kidding!) and covered in dark black medicinal and delicious fruit. So, you need a bit of room, and you need two plants to fertilize each other. But otherwise, they are just on auto pilot and very easy to grow.

Make sure you get the edible kind (the black ones) and cook the berries before you eat them. The leaves, twigs, bark etc are all poisonous so don’t eat them! But the flowers are medicinal as well and we will talk about them in spring!
